This summer, ProTrition Feed introduced three new Cumberland Mills-branded products in 10-pound bags that you will soon find on the shelves of your local Co-op.

Why did we choose this small bag size? Recently, interest in backyard chickens and other small livestock has increased throughout the country, including in Tennessee. Here at Co-op, we work hard to meet the needs of all our local farmers, large and small. Part of meeting those needs includes supplying fresh, high-quality feed products. While feed kept cool, dry, and away from pests will maintain its safety for a very long time, nutrients — especially vitamins — degrade over time, even under ideal storage conditions. Depending on how and where you store your feed, a good rule of thumb is to purchase no more than a 2- to 3-week supply at a time in warm weather and a 4- to 6-week supply in cool weather. A typical backyard flock of four to six laying hens will consume about 1 to 1.5 pounds of feed per day if the bagged product is their only source of feed. A 50-pound bag of feed would last this flock 33 to 50 days or longer, depending on how many treats, kitchen scraps, or hours of outdoor foraging time the flock was allowed in addition to its bagged feed.

Watch for these products in the convenient 10-pound bags:

• Cumberland Mills Chick Starter Crumble (CM 107) is an unmedicated starter/grower feed. It contains 19% crude protein, 3.25% crude fat, and a complete vitamin and mineral package to support the healthy growth and development of your baby chicks. It should be fed as the sole ration to chicks for the first 15 to 20 weeks of their lives.

• Cumberland Mills 22% Layer Mini-Pellet (CM 128) is a fully fortified layer diet. It is high in protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to support high-quality, maximum egg production and support chickens during times of stress, such as the molting season. Its small pellet size encourages consistent consumption and reduces feed waste.

• Cumberland Mills Complete Rabbit Pellet (CM 324) is an 18% protein, fortified diet for rabbits of all ages. This palatable pellet includes high-quality forage, which means it is suitable for feeding as the sole ration if desired.

As of the writing of this article, many areas throughout the Southeast had not seen suitable rainfall this summer. While spring was regarded as rather wet, typical summer heat has been predominantly present without desired rain. In late July, some experienced increased precipitation which somewhat helped to restore pasture. However, when grazing pastures have not had adequate rain, meeting the nutritional needs of the animal will be difficult. Many producers react to drought conditions by selling large numbers of cattle. With the currently high market conditions, selling is a viable option. If maintaining the cow herd is the priority, some practices can help.

At the height of mid-summer, it may feel too premature to discuss the upcoming fall molting season. However, the molting season can begin as early as August, depending on the exact age of your flock.

Ensiled forages protect nutrient loss from harvest through storage, are relatively easy to feed, and can increase proficiency of ration mixing and handling versus dry forage. Feeding environment and convenience influence dairy cattle response to rations and forage concentration. These lactational and feed intake responses to a given forage will be influenced not only by fiber concentration and digestibility but also physical form.
